Assignment 9 / Memory Map
From the discussion and work begun in class create a memory map for review on Tuesday March 29th. The MAP can be a collage, a drawing, a relief, etc. at 11 x 17" or LARGER. Include the most salient MEMORIES or IMPRESSIONS from your site walk.
Review your completed map, and on a separate sheet identify three of the most important ideas represented in your map. Remember- IDEAS are not objects like roads or buildings. Please read EBONEY'S class review if you need to refresh your memory.

The site were I would build my prov plaxza would be at Swater ST and point ST. I chose this place because the city has talk about taking down the old highway and making a part in its place.
the design will respond to the site by have a skate plaza but also have it have some green open space to hang out or have a work out space out side.
we will make the plaza so that it can be used by more then just skaters. even if it is not unusual for skaters to be skating with well other people are useing the place for other things they will get used to it just how they do it with the skating rink at KP. this project can be used by the city during there water fires and with many other events as well.At many different times of day and different times of year the year.
we will build the the park with other peoples help like other skaters that we could ask to help us. i know that there would be many skate or BMX shops or companies that would wont to be invalid because we would be able to advertise for them and the plaza would create more of a skate community so it may bring more people to by there gear.the park will be maintained by the skaters if you wont to skate here you have to help when ever you can

Assignment 8: Eboney
Part 2: the part that inspires me is that this is for a number of children that dont have much to look forward to. they are so innocent and half of them dont have a clue what so ever on why they are in the hospital with IV's and constantly taking different medicines.
this goes w/ my personal interests because i love kids, i love helping people, and i love giving to things or someone that doesnt have much
some things i can add to this is my rose garden. i can research the place and figure where my project would fit on this site, and if its effective or not.
Assignment #8 (manny)
So, my project as you know is called Project Izzy. this is the project that im most glued to, not because its mine but its because it means something. we can make it into something by us, for others. i intend to incorporate mostly everybodys idea into this; the graffiti wall, the conrete benches, the rose garden, maybe the video game tournement, its all possible. as you know its basically a mini play ground for the patients or children who visit the hospital. with these new additions to the hospitals play ground, there will be more use, but itll be more helpful for the parents. the parents wouldnt have to worry about their children, just playing in the same park thats been there. this redesign symbolizes hope. it gives the kids and parents hope, that from having the same worn down playground meaning, things are the same, to it becoming more colorful, and entertain, meaning, better things are to come in the future. a song that i can connect this to, is Castle Walls by T.I, the messege is similar to this project, because in the song, its said, "everyone thinks, that i have it all, but its so empty living behinf these casdtle walls". think about that messege in this project. for phasing? we could do what i want to incorporate one by one. every other project is small, quick and do-able, to be incorporated in this project. below are some photos i took of the play ground.
Part 2.
this project inspired me because, its not something we can say we built, but we build it for a reason. its something that not only we can cherish, but also children and parents who need hope can cherish it too. i mean if we could possibly do this project, i would work day and night, non-stop to finish it.
since i like music, sports and drawing, we can incorporate all three in to this project. in one of the pictures, there is like a hidden mini auditorium where the children can speak and sit. we can use that for an activity maybe karoke or if they have an activity with music or anything. with sports we can design the middle field to be used for mini sports, like football or soccer, etc. for drawing, we can post up the graffiti wall somewhere nice, so the kids could draw on in if they'd like.
three things that i would to to contibute to this project, is that i will design where things will go, what to remodel, i will re-write, my proposal for the CEO of the hospital to gain comfirmation to do this project, i will also write to other companies, for supplies or anything. third, i will research, all of the materials needed to incorporate everyone project in this one.
Assignment 8 :Alex
My favorite proposal was Carlos's. I really like the idea of building a skate park. I dont remember where we said we were going to possably build it but maybe in an abandon lot or where the oh highway is being torn down. His idea was to build a mixture between a skatepark and a normal park. Skaters would use the skatepark at any time of day they want and anyone could go to the normal park and do whatever. It probably wont be used during the winter because of snow. Like i said we would build the skatepark and a normal park. we would build ramps and stuff for the skatepark and benches and maybe gardens for the normal park. I think it dose need to happen in phases. The main idea is the skatepark so we would start with that, then move on to the normal park. I know I would use the skatepark so i could help maintain it.
Part 2
Building the skatepark inspires me because I have always dreamed of building a skatepark. I love to skateboard so that could intersect with the skatepark. Me and my friends always chill alot and maybe we could go spend time in the park too. Three items could be Skateboarding ramps. the layout of the skatepark and what exactally we would want in the skatepark.
homework 8 - TJ
Project Izzy
The site will be at the Children’s Hospital on Eddy Street. They have a little park area there now, but we could build a nicer and better one for the kids. The park will be there because it would be right outside the hospital and easy for the kids to go. This design will respond to the site very well because kids will be excited to have a new park to play on. The hospital would look nicer. Also, The Met would get good responses because of the students that build this project. Instead of it being just a hospital park, it should be a community park so kids in the community can go there and have fun too. The kids from the hospital can meet new kids instead of the same people every day. I was thinking we could build a jungle gym, some slides, sea saws, and maybe a pond? A gazebo with flowers around it, and any new ideas we think of along the way. First we will have to find out what materials we’ll need and how much everything will cost. Next we would have to write up letters to company’s to ask to donate materials and supplies to make this project happen. Then we will have to come up with a proposal and a model or sketch of the park. We’ll have to sit down and talk to the CEO of the hospital to get approval of the project. After we’d have to get our materials and start the building on the project. The park could be maintained by the janitors at the hospital since it will be on their property.
The thing that inspires me about this project is how the project its self got inspired by a little girl that stays smiling even though she’s ill. This would be a project that I would work on, on the weekends and in any spare time I can because it’s going to be for a good reason and make the community a lot prettier. Since this little girl inspired the project, we should call the park “Park Izzy.” This project doesn’t go with any of my interest outside of school because I'm getting older and don’t really go to parks anymore to play. But I do enjoy helping people or making something better. To contribute to this project I would help write, draw and design. Mostly I would like to do the building because that’s what I’m good at and enjoy doing. I would build a picnic table, some benches, possible a swinging bench.
This project is an amazing idea and it would be wonderful if we went through with it. It gives kids hope and makes them smile and that would make me feel amazing as a person to know I’m the one who helps put that smile upon their face.

assignment 8 (Matthew)
Part One:
My favorite proposal was the gazebo project. I liked that not only is this project easy to build but, we could make this our own. A creative design that we could represent some one or something. The gazebo also could be used for multiple purposes. It could be used as an eating space, a stage or a event space. All times of the year could use the gazebo. I see the gazebo being at a hospital park, that way we could still dedicate the project to the children and family's involved with cancer. The park would benefit from the gazebo with access to a stage for Ronald McDonald House fundraisers. Science its in a hospital park, it will be maintained by the hospital grounds keepers. I don't know what park this project should be apart of yet, but I was thinking it should be close to Ronald McDonald House and the hospital.
Part To:
This project inspired me because it is simple but we can design something unique. I also was interested in this project because it is realistic and still a challenge to see what we could do with it. I would be more involved if the gazebo stood for something.
One interest of mine is music. I play music and sometime would like a nice relaxing place to play in Providence. Another is art. The gazebo could still have a mural, or a decorative space for art. Another is Going Green. The gazebo could be built with green sustainable and recycled materials.
One thing I could do for the project is to design and research the weird and funky designs a gazebo could have. another is to do some research upon some cancer patients. and finally I could be a presenter, or communicator to the client.
Assignment #8 Hector
Gamers Edge
As you may already know, my project is called Gamers Edge. It’s where gamers from all over the state can come together for a weekly competition. My ideal site would be somewhere downtown where many people can not only see what’s going on, but also can easily stop and join as well. I would love it to be where the painting of Andre the Giant is, but since that isn’t really possible; I would like to do this on the school campus. I would project the games on the wall of the Justice building outside. The reason why I would like to do this here are for several reasons. First, it is something I have easy access to. I’m sure that the school would be more than happy to help me with this and they love to support events that involve the entire community and not just our school. Second, it is easy to find and easy to get into. Lastly, I can bring the community surrounding my school better. I don’t really see any type of interaction in the community so this could definitely help. The way I want to do this is every Saturday the event will be held. The people who will use this project would be anyone and everyone who wants to. I am not making this event for just teens. I would love for families, boys and girls, and people from all ages to participate in this event. It would during the day until the early night. As for different times of the year, well for now the event itself would only be in the summer, as for the site itself, I am planning it to be used throughout the whole year if possible. The things that Downcity Design will build are a few things. Those things are:
· Benches
· Tables
· Stands for projector
· Box to keep Xbox, controllers, etc
· Tents/Roof
There might be other things, but I’m not sure yet. This project isn’t a necessarily long. In order to build all of this stuff, get some buzz, and all the items we need, it could take 2 to 3 weeks max. This will be maintained by me and any of the DCD kids that want to help. Money wise, I will be asking for players to pay so that I can pay the school for the electricity that I spend and buy games and things like that. I might even buy snacks and drinks if I make enough.
What inspired me to do this was the conversation in class. We talked about it and I thought it was a good idea so I decided to sort of take this project under my wing. Three ways this could intersect with my personal interest are first, I love playing video games. Second, I love playing with my friends. Third, I love showing off. If I could somehow do the three at the same time it would be awesome and that’s why I like this project. I get to play video games with my friends and go to show off the little skills I have. It’s what people call a win win… win. Three tangible items I will make that will contribute to the group are: A project proposal that I will show to most likely to the principal to my building and Doc the Director of the Met. The area we would have for the gamers to be at that could also be used by the Met students and surrounding community can use while Gamers Edge is not happening. The last thing would be the posters and fliers I would make to promote the event.

Assignment #8 Dean
When I picture Izzy I see a little girl with a bald head and black eyes. She is happy because we remodeled a park where she can play outside the hospital. She is happy because she can run around and slide and not have to worry about getting yelled at for doing so. The hospital can be very depressing for Izzy because she is surrounded by medicine and death. Izzy likes the park because being outside makes her feel like a regular kid. The park is at RIH and will be used for a week in the summer for Camp Dotty. It can also be used year round for kids like Izzy. The park will have a slide, swings and a jungle gym. It will also have a rose garden for people to smell and bench and picnic tables. The first phase of this project would be to build the jungle gym, the 2nd phase would be to build the benches or picnic tables. The final stage is the landscaping which includes the rose garden. This park will hopefully be maintained by the hospital grounds people or volunteers. This project inspired me because my grandmother passed away from cancer and I think she would have e liked the park. Three ways my outside activities can intersect with this proposal is my Seinior Thesis Project, homework and getting my mother from work. Three ways I will contribute to this group wil be building, manpower and research.

Assignment 8: A Project with Personality
PART 1: Revisit the first post "Chess Table" submitted by John Carlos. Remember our conversation, how his description made you feel, how the class reacted. Keep this emotional response in mind while you write a creative paragraph about your favorite proposal. You must address ALL of the following points in your writing, but you may do so in any way you see fit. If you feel that a narrative, a rap, an interpretive dance, a full scale model, a folk song best describes your project (as long as you touch on all of the points below) by all means...
a. discuss site, where and why?
b. how will the design respond to the site?
c. who will use this project? at different times of day? different times of year?
d. what EXACTLY will we build?
e. does this need to be phased? if so describe the multiple phases?
f. how will this be maintained?
PART 2: Define your role in the project.
a. What part of this project inspires you? (if your answer is nothing, then introduce something that would inspire)
b. Describe 3 ways your personal interests outside of school could intersect with this proposal.
c. Describe 3 tangible items that you will make/research/write/design/draw to contribute to the group.
My Dream Gazebo
I like this second gazebo because it is metal and it will last longer. It is also a perfect size for a park. It is open to the air. I got this picture from (http://studiomagnacrafts.com/web/products/gazebos/copper-gazebo.jpg)

Providence Film Festival
My proposal is to create a film festival village in
The Prov. Film Festival will have more positive affect upon the state and little to know negative affect. The theater and performing arts will be affected by the PFF because it opens places for acting, musical performance and movie screening. Another group will be the owners or proprietors of business around the PFF. More customers will be brought in, not just from RI, but from all over if this becomes a film festival.
The P.F.F.’s location will be in down town
My project is similar to the Sunset Film Festival, in sense of the event. I want to be able to have screen showings and bring in profit for
The PFF is unique because it’s not a mega film festival but it still has the feeling for that. The project will also have something for all forms of arts. Like I said that it will have a theater, a graffiti wall and a stage. I said that it will be under the old bridge in down town, so that way it still has the feeling of urbanization and will utilize space.

spot 411
Spot 411
I was thinking something like a teenage hangout some what like a smoothie bar. I will have to find an abandon building or shop. I could turn that into a little chill spot. It would have food, tables, live music, and so on. It can open a 3:30 and close at 8:00 because that’s a reasonable time for kids my age. I think I would keep kids out the streets and off of drugs. It will defiantly have no liquor and drugs policy. Free of charge to get in food and drinks that will cost you. I don’t need a big building I just need something reasonable. I choose this idea because kids are always looking for things to do and want to chill. Like the mall kids go there and don’t even shop. Half the time I see kids hanging out in the food court not even eating.
If my idea is a go people will see the difference with how many kids get off the streets. This is a good chance to make my community a better place and to give teens what they been waiting for. I fill that my idea is not something just to waste time but meaningful. You never know one day it can get famous and me idea will be all over in different states of the U.S.A.
Proposal for Community Investment
My proposal affects groups of people because they are usually in parks, playgrounds and in areas that people might require rest and maybe shade. Also, if it is raining out, people may use a gazebo as a shelter.
My proposal is located in Nuetaconkanut Park. Whenever I go to the park, I see so many people in a place with no shade. I feel that this park would benefit more people than any other place.
My idea is unique because I'm providing a service for the community as well as the neighborhood park. I don't think any other build can provide the same.
Rose garden proposal
SAKTE COMP!
My proposal will affect a wide range of people. the already existing skate community. it will alsp affect anyone who wants to try skateing for the first time. I would want new people to try it and hopefully they will make it a passion like i have.
I would like to have this located downtown somewhere. Prefebly at the icerink when they take the ice out of it. That would be a perfict place because when the ice isnt there, skaters are there every day because it is such a good surface to skate on.
This proposalis simlar to probably any other skate competition bcause Im obvously not the first person to think of holding one. My idea is unique to providence because we never have skate competitions here and im sure that a lot of people would like to participate in it.
Something i forgot to mention is we would have different competitions deoending on what someons skill level is in skateing. By this i mean beginer, intermediate, and advanced.
THE MET DINER!
My Idea affects a number of people. It affects The Met students and staff, and the South Side communtiy. It affescts those people because it gives The Met students an opportunity at learning the art of cooking, gives kids jobs, and a nice place to eat before, during, and or after school. It affects the South Side community because we would be cleaning up the area and also giving them a place to eat too.
The location of the diner is right up the street. Its like a three minute walk away from the school. Im not sure what the address is.
I researched my idea and I couldn’t find anyone who used a old diner as a school project to benefit their community.
My idea is unique because its an idea that no one has thought of before at The Met. Well I believe no one has thought of the idea because I havnt heard it before. My mom actually gave me the idea a while ago when we were driving by the old diner. I think this idea will be great for everyone.
My proposal is to build a skate park. The purpose of the skate park is to bring our communities youth and adults together by allowing them to have a place to skate or BMX. So that they don't have to resort to skating or BMX in private property and end up getting in trouble for doing one other passion.
My idea is unique because. I don't just want to build a skate park I also want to make it so that we can incorporate other people's talents as well. If I would design the skate park I would make it in such a way that would allow my other Downcity design classmates would be able to incorporate their ideas into the park. Such as the graffiti wall idea, the outside theater, their benches, the basketball court etc. so my skateboard will bring together more than just skaters or BMX but a wide variety of talents and allow people to collaborate with different things. I would hope that would allow other people to find their talents or even find new ones.
My proposal affects a wide variety of people because it would incorporate more than just a skate park I said it would bring different attractions, talents, unique abilities, even a place to just hang out with friends.
If I were to build my proposed project would be built in a abandoned parking lot around my community. Another place where my park could be built is in the city where they're taken down the old highway their planning to have that be an open place for part so I think that would be a great place to build a skate park the other incorporated attractions such as the ones I mentioned before .
My proposal is similar to the skate park video that we saw in class. Because I want to build skate Park that will bring people together in our community.
project Izzy
As i said before this park will be for any of the children that visit the hospital, as visitors or patients. the thought came to my mind when i was thinking about parks. i thought itd be a major impact on this group of kids and their families. the reason i want to do this is because the kids with cancer or any other illnesses fight for their lives, but still have a smile on their face. it causes the family pain to see them go through this, but also bring them joy to see that other people in the community helping.
As i said Before the spot i would like to pick is the RI Childrens Hospital, because the children need to have fun, and treated with more than just treatments, but as children. they need to be outside playing on junggle gyms and in the sand, and doing more fun activities.
A similiar project/camp that i found that connects to my prject is Camp Dotty, which also takes place at the RI Childrens Hospital for a week in the summer. the camp has been going on for ten years and is dedicated to a young woman named Dorothy (Dotty).
My project is unique because im rying to make an impact on a group of children and their families. i want them to know that there is alot more people out there paying attnetion to this epidemic. we do need to find a cure for cancer. this park sysmbolizes hope. that in time better things will come, and hopfully in time a cure will be found to stop the pain, and bring happiness.
Concrete Benches
My proposal affects everyone who is in the MET community because people like to be able to sit comfortably in the shade on a hot sunny day and have a conversation.
The location of these curcular benches are at trees surrounding the MET public and/or peace street campus. These locations are ideal because people who are involved with the MET and/or the surrounding community may enjoy these benches.
My proposal is similar to a picnic table style in the shade. It's more similar to the round formation that is created around a cozy campfire. However, this seating is not made of wood or anything like that.
My idea isn't that unique but I think we would get a lot of media attention.

Airsoft Warfare
Gamers Edge
My Project is to have a weekly event that I call Gamers Edge. What it is going to be is a weekly video game competition that I would like to hold outside. Every Saturday for about 5 to 6 hours and teams would play, for everyone to see, on two separate consoles, probably Xbox 360’s, and on two separate projectors. Teams would pay to play in and a champion would be announced every week.
This would be for everyone and anyone. This isn’t just for the younger people, though I’m sure most of the participants will be from the ages of 13-25. I would hope that people from different ages and races will participate in this. I would also like this to be more about working together than just winning, and that’s why you would have to play in teams of 4. I am also thinking about picking teams at random so people are forced to work with new team members. That would be for people who don’t already have complete teams.
I do not have a specific spot yet, but I would like the area to be urban. I would like to do it in a parking lot or empty place where I can project the games on a wall.
The only similar project I can really relate this to is an outdoor movie project. There is one on Westminster St, Providence RI called Movies on the Block. On their facebook it says “Providence’s only outdoor movie screen opens for its third season. Every Thursday beginning June 4, 2009 and running through September 24th, movies will be screened at dusk on the corner of Westminster St. and Union St. Pop hits, cult classics and even some local shorts.” This is similar because what this program is doing is a weekly screening where people come together for one reason. Their reason is movies while mine is video games.
My idea is unique because there has not been anything like this in Rhode Island before. There have been video game competitions, but nothing ever consistent. Also, the competitions usually aren’t team affiliated and that is something I really want to input on these competitions. My project is also unique because there hasn’t really been anything this major in Rhode Island for video game lovers. Never can video gamers can come together every week and play against one another and just have fun. That is why my project is unique.
